Inheriting the Kingdom

Man is composed of three distinct parts:

  • the body – our physical being (the flesh) which provides mobility but which brings passions and the risk of dictating our attention to selfish needs;
  • the spirit – which is dead at birth (due to man’s sin nature) but which is regenerated by the Holy Spirit upon salvation;
  • the soul – our individual personality –- housing the mind (thinking), the will (decisionmaking), and the emotions (feeling)

In the following passage from Galatians 5, Paul declares that our soul is the prize in a battle between the flesh and the Holy Spirit. Paul uses the language of the courtroom and the battlefield to indicate the seriousness of the issue.

I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusts (wars) against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.
